Long Distance Love

His & Hers Snow Gear
(M and I in our snow gear via my Instagram-@ritafujika)

I found a letter while at my parents house from my father to my late grandmother.  The letter was filled with excitement and love for the new women he was dating - my mother.  To say it brought tears to my eyes was an understatement. As I settle into a new phase of my relationship with M (he just started med school in another state) I am reminded of my parents own phase of long distance love. Once married my mother went back to Japan while my father boarded a Navy submarine for a year.  A year of limited phone calls, handwritten letters and wondering how the other person is doing. Although the whole idea seems so romantic in theory, I'm sure it was a trying time.

This new phase has been hard to say the least and it is situations like this letter, their love, that has put all of it into perspective.  As hard as it may be I am thankful we are able to talk everyday (or even see each other thanks to technology) and we are just a plane ride away.

Sunrise in the Himalayas-Ghandruk, Nepal

Nepal_Sunrise

Throughout my travels my trek along the Ghorepani-Ghandruk circuit may have been one of the hardest things I've ever done. Exhausted from the 8+ hour hike the day before, I dragged myself out of bed to watch the sunrise from the top of a small Nepali village. As the sun slowly rose, views of Annapurna South and Fishtail Mountain came into view. And what seemed to be on cue, music began to play from the valley below. This moment, isolated from tourists in the Himalayas, is still my most surreal and memorable travel moment.
